my mom just bought a Compaq Presario low-price PC with xp
home. the kind with no xp install cd. you have to make
your own recovery disk. Anyway, before I could finish the
windows and virus updates on her slow dial-up connection,
the "Sasser" worm hit right in the middle of the
installation of the windows updates. I cleaned of the worm
with the cleaner on the symantec site but now the machine
freezes on shutdown. Otherwise, it works fine. I found
several documents in the knowledge base on shutdown
problems that I printed out but I was wondering if anybody
had any advice? besides not buying a low-price compaq with
no installation cd or using dialup ;-)

Hi,

Please check if the Sasser worm is completely cleaned out of your system by
visiting the Microsoft Website and then follow the instructions listed
there.
http://www.microsoft.com/security/incident/sasser.asp

Shutdown can be caused by various issues like a incompatible driver,
misbehaving program, curoupted file, etc. Please refer the Microsoft
Support WebCast link at

Startup and Shutdown Problems

If still the problem persists, I would like you to look at this website to
further troubleshoot this issue.
