since installing XP Professional over 98 when I shut down
my computer it doesn't totally shut down. I get the
screen "It is ok to shut down your computer now" and then
it doesn't automatically shut down. What do I need to do.

Does your computer hang and the mouse freeze?
I had this problem with my usb mouse and when I changed to ps2 again had no
trouble or check this out.

You might try following the instructions you are given. That's what I do when
I'm told that it's OK to shut down my computer. I turn it off, and the noise of
the computer fan running stops and the room becomes quiet. For some reason,
mine has not been programmed (to my knowledge) to shut itself off automatically
and it never occurred to me that it was supposed to, particularly since it never
did just go ahead and do it without involving me.

Your bios/system is too old, upgrade your system bios.

Most ACPI system will shutdown, but if you system is Standard PC you need to
update your bios, ask the manufacture for a newer ACPI bios if they have it,
after that you will need to do a new install of XP

To check what is system you have go to Start, Run, type devmgmt.msc, click
Computer
Is it ACPI or Standard PC?

Thanks
