Start - Turn Off Computer ALWAYS comes up with Sleep as the selected
item. I dont put my computer to sleep. When I am done I turn it off.
I would be willing to wager that MOST people turn the computer off when
they select turn OFF computer. So how do I change the default so it
stays at my last selected action as it did in all previous version of
Windows (Or is this yet another thing Bill has decided how we should use
our computer and locked in the way he uses his)?

The last thing you said is the right thing.

If you type Power Options on the Start Menu and press enter, then go to
Change plan settings and Change advanced power settings you can change what
the large power button on the Start Menu does under Power buttons and lid.

If your motherboard supports S3 suspend when you sleep your computer it
should fully power down (fans, CPU, hard drive etc) apart from the RAM, so
your computer can resume in just a couple of seconds.

You can also hibernate which would save your current session to the hard
drive and completely power the system down. Yet still make the computer
power on and resume your session faster than a cold boot.

Or there's a hybrid sleep mode, which will keep data in RAM, but if it does
lose power (from being unplugged) it will resume like hibernation.

I think there is no way to change the action of the 'power iconed
button'.
(or I haven't found it yet.)
I guess this is to prevent people from accidentally pressing it,
because that
action cannot be cancelled and could result in loss of current works.

When I was using Windows 95, I'd heard so much about the importance of
turning the pc off by selecting the Shutdown menu instead of pushing
the
power button on the computer. (Can you believe that this was even a
question
on a PC exam?) But, these days, the computer's power management got
smarter. So, if you push the power button on your computer, Windows
auto-
matically intercepts the action and does the same thing when you
choose
Shutdown menu. So, I think if you want to shutdown your computer
quickly
,not using the shut down menu which pops up when you press the
triangle
button on the start menu, then pushing the power button on your
computer
could be a good choice.

But anyways, if somebody knows how to change the action of the power
iconed button, please let me know. Thanks.

Dude all I want to do is when i click START - TURN OFF COMPUTER that
SHUT DOWN is the default option so I dont have to click YET ANOTHER
useless added 'feature' every time I want to turn off my computer. I
could not tell if what all you went on about did that or not, but
hibernating and setting up my motherboard and keyboard are not what I am
looking to do. I want my computer to be SIMPLE to use like it was under
XP! :)

This is actually simple to do, once you find where to go and do it.

1. Open up Power Options from your Control Panel.
2. Click "Change plan settings" for your selected power plan.
3. Click "Change advanced power settings" on the next window.
4. Expand "Power buttons and lids".
5. Expand "Start menu power button".
6. Change the setting to whatever you preffer.

Be aware that you MUST change this for whatever power plan you use, and you
must change it for the new power plan if you change to a new one.

HUH? All I want is to be able to shut my computer down by clicking
START - TURN OFF COMPUTER and have Shut Down be the default options like
it has been for years! I have no idea what button(s) you are talking
about!

I agree and not having a confirmation on shutdown is just crazy! What the
hell were they thinking? A simple slip of the mouse could cost some people
a fortune.

Look and you will find.

What version of Vista are you using? I'm running Ultimate and I don't have a
"Turn off computer" option. If you follow the directions the OP posted,
you'll get what you're looking for... at least in Ultimate. If you're using
Home Basic/Premium, then I cannot assist you further.
