A fragmented hard drive will not cause your computer to shut down.
The first thing to look at is thermal issues; do you have a proper heatsink
and fan on the processor, is the fan turning or is it full of dirt that
slows or stops it, are you overclocking your processor, is the HSF properly
seated (level and flush to the processor) and is thermal grease properly
applied to the surface? Your video chipset and motherboard northbridge and
voltage regulator are also large sources of heat.
If all these are OK and you've ruled out these and other heat issues, try
the power supply. Check voltages and load on each rail.
Next, try software. Possibly a prank/virus could cause the system to shut
down regularly. If it's EXACTLY one minute each time, I would suspect this.
Make sure that in addition to virus scanning, you check the Startup folder
and registry Run keys for malicious programs. Run a spyware checker like
Spybot or AdAware. In addition to your regular virus scanning, run Trend's
Housecall, Bitdefender, or NAV Online to do additional checks.
