I am having the same problem,it just started recently,my computer just goes in total shut down for no reason. It will happen every few minutes to a half hour or hour, with no ryme or reason. I have to wait and then power it back on where it then wants to run the scan disk for not shutting down properly.? Why is this happening and how do I fix it? Thanks.

Poof! and it's gone!--usually some sort of hardware problem. Loose A/C power
cable, etc
From personal experience, a bad motherboard can start failing in this
manner. (Two similar boards)

usually an actual shutdown problem is hardware related.
have you blown the dust out of tll the fans?
if it's under warranty, call the maker.
if not, have a geek (NOT the Geek Squad) look at it.

Why do you say "NOT the Geek Squad? Do they have a bad rep? I've never used
them, but I almost did, is there something wrong with them?

www.consumerist.com

Lots of entries about GeekSquad. And I can tell you from personal experience
that I've fixed a *lot* of customers' computers *after* they've been to
GeekSquad.

Aside from their questionable technical skills, here in the Metro
Washington, DC area
their rate is:
$75.00 just to show up
$75.00 per 15 minutes, rounded up.

As relayed to me by a new Client! ;)

Thanks, I won't use them.

My computer is doing the same thing! It just started yesterday! It randomly shuts itself down. I have an HP Laptop with Vista. The motherboard was replaced last year, (defective straight from factory). Everything else is good in it. I can't keep it on long enough to do ANYTHING with it, updating or anything. I can't keep it on long enough to run my anti-virus scan to see if this was a virus. Then once I turn it back on I get that, your computer unexpectently shut down, check the disk drives, etc. HELP ME PLEASE!!! I need it fixed by Monday morning (today is Saturday morning here). I have to use my laptop at work Monday, but right now I don't see that happening. I'm fully prepared to do a full system restore if that'll fix the issue. I HAD restore points, but something happened and now they are gone (gotta run the anti-virus scan once the computer stays on, think that might be a virus).

PLEASE HELP ME! My computer is only 2 years old, its gotta a lotta life ahead of it.:).

Vista shuts down for no reason
Please help! I have Windows Ultimate and it is an HTPC (Home Theater PC).
It has three tuners (HDTV Wonder, AverMedia A180, AverMedia 1500 MCE). It
has an HIS 2600 Pro video card.

When watching Vista MCE shows - it will just shutdown - not restart - the PC
actually turns off. The BIOS is set to start up on a power failure - so it
starts back up.

I guess my question is why would my PC just decide to turn off? The CPU is
a Quad core Q6600 - it is not running hot. The PC is home built and is an
Intel DP35DP motherboard.

This has only started recently - this did not happen before. I have no idea
what is causing it. Please help! I have checked the logs - there is nothing
- other than a log event saying the PC did not shut down correctly.

Please help! Thanks

You probably have either an underrated or defectivepower supply unit.
