Is there any way I could put icons on the Vista desktop that are linked
to shut down or restart functions?

Try the following steps to create a shutdown
shortcut that will do the job with one click.

1. Right-click any empty location on
your desktop.

2. Click...New, Shortcut.

The Create Shortcut Wizard appears.

3. In the 'Type the Location of the Item' field...
type or copy/paste... shutdown -s -t 0

Next / Enter a Name for the Shortcut / Finish.

For a Restart shortcut...
type or copy/paste shutdown -r -t 0

Help and Support

Search for "command line"

The very first search result that comes out is
"Command-line reference for IT Pros"
