shut down is very slow

I am having a problem shutting down my computer.

When I click Start>turn off computer it takes around 2 minutes before the
shut down dialog appears. When I click Shut Down, it gets to the "Windows is
shutting down" screen, then hangs for another 2 minutes.

This only started happening recently, and a couple of weeks ago it would
shut down completely within 45 seconds.

I have run Norton AV scan and Spybot search & destroy but they found
nothing. Yet I still think it may be a virus: if I turn the pc on and close
it down after a few minutes of inactivity, it is fine; if I close it down
after using it for a few hours, the problems begin.

I know a clean install will resolve the problem but that is a bit drastic.

Can anyone think of a way out of this?

See if perhaps you have set the pagefile to delete itself at shutdown....

What's it set to - if it exists?

0 would mean it is NOT clearing the pagefile. It existing at all means it
was added at some point by you, a tweak or something else more than likely.
It is set correctly to not affect performance. However - you may want to
'cycle' it. Set it to 1, reboot. Logon, reboot again. Logon and set it to
0 again and reboot twice again.

You also may want to do a few small things...

- Download, install, update and do a full system scan with
SuperAntiSpyware...

- Do a disk cleanup - also removing all but the latest restore point.

- reboot

- Download and install the latest hardware drivers for:
- motherboard chipset
- video card
- network card
- sound card
(from each individual component manufacturer if possible - not from
Microsoft.)

- reboot

- Perform a CHKDSK - note you might have to set it to do this on the next
reboot - that's fine, do so and reboot to let it run.

- Uninstall any unneeded applications from the Add or Remove Programs
control panel...

- Check your startup applications (start button --> run --> msconfig -->
ok --> startup tab) and report back everything in that list here.

- Perform a disk defragmentation on the system (usually C:) drive.

I had a windows 98 that was slow shutting down, but a man ran a
shutdown patch on it, but you might find something here that would

Also try examining the event viewer application log for hung applications or
the system log for bad drivers. Sometimes security software can be
incompatible or have settings such as disabled multiple firewalls which may
cause such a problem. If it is a bad driver for a device it may be possible
to disable an unused device (such as a dial-up modem) . Remember, you can
always force a shutdown by pressing the power button until the machine shuts
off.

If anything, it now closes down even faster.

If the problem recurs, check Event Viewer again. An application can hang
upon shutdown. Sometimes I have found similar errors in my own log but I am
not having problems with Auto Updates nor with shutdown. Consider disabling
Fast User Switching if it is enabled since it can also cause problems (if
you can live without it).
