I want to know if there is software or a list of process that are mandatory
for XP to run. I want to shut down everything except the basic processes
that XP needs to run so that I can start a PC cleanup and defragmentation
without the overhead of all the other "unnecessary" processes running.

All you need to do is to boot into "Safe Mode" and perform
your desired maintenance routines.

Won't matter much. A defrag spends virtually all of its time waiting anyway
(for the drive head to move).

THANKS this spent to really speed things up, at least until I get the chance
to do a complete rebuild.
