John

I seem to have lost my "shutdown computer" or "turn off
computer" icon. I lost it when a company on the web tried
to connect me to them and then charge me for the call. It
seems they sneakly deleted the icon, now I am not sure
how to restore it. Any help you give would be
appreciated....

Type regedit in Start - Run and look here

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Data type Range Default value
REG_DWORD 0 | 1 0

Description
Removes the Shut Down item from the Start menu and disables the Shut Down button on the Windows Security dialog box.

As a result, users cannot use the Windows user interface to shut down the system. However, this entry does not prevent users from running programs that shut down Windows.

This entry stores the setting of the Disable and remove the Shut Down command Group Policy. Group Policy adds this entry to the registry with a value of 1 when you enable the policy. If you disable the policy or set it to Not configured, Group Policy deletes the entry from the registry and the system behaves as though the value is 0.

Value Meaning
0 The policy is disabled or not configured. The Shut Down items appear.
1 The policy is enabled. The Shut Down items do not appear.
