Shrinking hard drive

I have a Compac Presarior 5404, with a 60 Gb hard drive, but seems to only
have about have the capacity shown. I have occasionally heard clicking or
clunking sounds from my computer. Could this be a software problem, or might
I be close to hard drive failure. This computer and hard drive are six years
old.

My computer is pretty well protected from malware; I use Windows Defender,
Symantec Antivirus, Zonealarm, Spybot and Adaware. I keep everything
including XP Pro updated.

Thanks

Clicking emitting from the HD is very often a sign of a failing drive.
If you have no data backups do them now
Assertain the make of HD and use the manu checking utility

While my hardrive may still be in trouble, I think I can only use 30 Gb is
that I am still using FAT32 rather than NTFS. Apparently, FAT32 cannot
recognize more than a 32 Gb drive.

Partition the drive. If you need to have FAT32 for
compatibility with some other OS, have your primary XP
partition NTFS.

The limitation is with XP not FAT32, XP should see any size FAT32 partition
up to 2TB, it just can't create/format a new FAT32 volume/partition over 32mb
in Disk Management..
A third party software is needed to do this..
http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/fat32format.htm
With the above app you can with the help of XP's Disk Management format any
size partition up to 750GB with FAT32 in seconds or minutes, ie, super fast..
Should use a partitioning app like Symantecs Partition Magic or similar, if
your data is on one large C: partition, backup your data first, though..

WinDirStat is a neat little app that can help to id large files that may be
expanding or taking up space on the HDD, enabling you to see it in a
visual/graphical way, read the web site info for more details..
Good luck..

FAT32 can recognize far more than that--I've formatted 160GB FAT32
partitions.

The problem is that XP doesn't know how to format more than a 32GB
FAT32 partition. It's a limit of XP's formatter, not FAT32.
