I don't know if that has been reported anywhere, but I just found a bug in
IE's showModalDialog

Believe it or not, the "status" option to remove the status bar in a dialog
only works with NOMINAL IP address.. if you put a numeric IP, it will always
show the status bar.

I must say I hard a hard time to isolate that one...

Its not a bug. Its a feature!
(Since IE7 is in beta everything in V6 is a feature
If you open a numeric address there are security and privacy issues.
Showing the status bar with the numeric IP address discloses the location to
the user. Since from a Modal Dialog the user can't access the Internet
Control Panel and the Security Tab (if the status bar is hidden), then
forcing the status bar to be shown if the URL location is suspicious(ie
numeric) allows the user to open the Security tab (by clicking on the zone
icon in the status bar which is now visible) and decide how to treat the
numeric location - whether to add it to the Trusted or Restricted sites.
There is also a setting on the Advanced tab to 'Show friendly URLs', I
haven't tried it but perhaps this setting may be affecting your results.
