Is there a way to cause the name of the contact that is
associated with the appointment or meeting to show up on
the Calendar entry without having to type it into the
Subject?

I am accustomed to ACT! where this happened
automatically, but I can't find any reference to a way to
make it happen in Outlook.

Using "Categories" can help keep things all linked together.
You can "link" calendar entries to contacts at the bottom
of the appointment page...just click the "Contact..." button
and select the contact to link the appointment to. You will
then be able to open the contact, click on the "Activities" tab
and see all items linked to that contact. Same thing with emails.
This could be used in conjunction with Tasks (which will show
up in your main calendar in a particular view).

You can also:
Open the contact
Select the ACTIONS menu
Select NEW APPOINTMENT WITH CONTACT

And it will link the meeting to the contact also showing
their name in the CONTACTS... text box at the bottom
of the Appointment window.

The neat thing about linking the contacts to appointments
is when you click on the ACTIVITIES tab on the contact
it will show all the appointments that you have made with
that contact.
