showing movie in powerpoint 2000

I am running a xp pro system and I am trying to run a movie on powerpoint
2000 but when I try to run it all I get is a black screen where the movie
should be. The movie is a mpeg-2 file. I am trying to run this on a
projector hooked up by a vga cord. It will not play even if I play it on my
primary monitor. What sould I do? I need to have it playing by tomorrow.

Yes,

It's a "laptop" specific problem.

You can kinda prove a laptop will have the problem (before you get to an event/conference/etc), by connecting a normal
external monitor to the same port on the laptop where you would connect the projector
