Showing data flow

Think I need to make an animated line into an object so that I can show flow between 2 points. Like to make it an object so I can make it longer/shorter/fatter/thinner etc.

Something like the following
-----------------------------------------------
OOOOOOOXOOOXXOOOOXXXOOOXOOO
-----------------------------------------------

Like to be able to make the x's different colors and/or shapes,
and be able to make the o's into blank spaces or just show the x's at random or various intervals.
Would like to have 3 different speed types (fast/med/slow)

Any idea of the best way to do this? I currently have PowerPoint 2002 SP-2 but would be willing to upgrade if that would help

The custom animation settings in PPT 2002 will do what you want. I think
the best thing would be for you to simply apply some of the various
effects and see which does the job best for you. Grow/Shrink might help,
but it really depends on exactly what it is you're trying to accomplish.
You might also need to use a number of lines in order to grow the line
longer or make it fatter... In that case, you'd simply use a series of
animations, bringing the second iteration of the line in over the first
and exiting the first.

You could also consider an animated GIF.
