"Show Desktop Icons" has disappeared

When I right click on the desktop (to show the desktop icons) the 3rd group
starting with "show desktop icons" has disappeared. How can I restore it?
I really need to see some of those icons on the desktop. thanks

Thanks, but that doesn't do it. That restored the icon but clicking on the
icon doesn't restore the desktop.

What I meant to say was that when I right click on the desktop and then on
"arrange icons by" there are usually 3 groups, 1)name, size, type, modified,
2) show in groups, auto arrange, align to grid, 3) show desktop items, lock
items on desktop, run desktop cleanup wizard. I have only groups 1 & 2. What
happened to 3? How do I get it back?
