Should we rename this news group to comp.periphs.printers.cannon...?

Okay I'll offer myself as we sell many more Epson compatible cartridges than
Canon.
Note only one "n" otherwise you'll be suspected of wishing to buy black
powder and shot.
What was the query ?

Seems that is the only help you get here..

Or is Epson a dirty Word..?

More seriously, comp.periphs.printers.laser and
comp.periphs.printers.ink would be good to separate the two main
families, as I'm a laser guy and would happily filter out all the ink
stuff (no offence...).

(There is "comp.laserprinters", but apparently it was created as a
moderated group, but the moderator has been AWOL for several years, so
no one can post in it.)

I'd object becaue I have both and they supplement each other. If the
gripe is about too much Canon, that's good becauase it either means they
make great printers or junk everybody complains about, valuable
information in either case if you are looking to byuy something. I would
never buy an Epson based on comments here, even if they do make good prints.

Not at all...it's just Canon has become rather popular and that's
reflected by the volume of discussion here about Canon products.

I used to be an HP fan (one laser and two inkjets), but switched to
Canon when the i850 came out. A friend bought one before me, and after
seeing its output, I was sold. It blew away anything else at the time
for price/performance, and ink tank refills are a breeze.

I've never owned an Epson for the same reason that many of my friends
have switched - every single person I know has had problems with
clogging (both original and aftermarket inks).

It's not like you are only allowed to subscribe to one or the other.
It's rare to have a post relevant to both (except for "which printer
should I buy" posts).

Currently for instance for stuff related to my Laserjet 4 I check in
this group (and have to skim through the 80% of postings on ink
printers), and comp.sys.hp.hardware, and skim the 80% of non-printer
hardware they discuss.

This is lovely - sortuv ducking around the houses: I still don't know what
the original posters query was.
From my supplier view. During the last 6 months the Canon BCI-6 and now i560
and all other Canon cartridges have shot to the top and are in the top 10
cartridges for sales. Customers repeat order frequently - tending to
indicate they are are well pleased with the Canon formular.
For my own part I cycle roughly 3 Epson's and 2 Canon's at a time with Photo
and plain old invoice and business printing.
I don't myself don't have any clog problems with the Epson's and constantly
wonder why others do. Some of my clients go back some 3 years now and they
are still repeat ordering on the JetTec ILRS cartridges: so they don't have
problems either. In fact the printheads of Canon do seem more fickle
particularly with an S-820 which has more Amber warning ability than any
traffic lights I've seen.
Maybe Epson will inevitably see the light when everyone discovers Canon.
It did seem important at the time to establish whether the OP wanted Cannon
supplies as I do a nice line in Black powder and grapeshot for the odd
pirate customer :-)

It's ironic that the scanner groups seem to be all about Epson.

I think that Canon decided to lower their ink prices and that has
caused people to vote with their pocketbooks. They also have a huge
number of different models at many price levels that probably catches
more attention and more different posts.

I think all companies and types of printers are viable, except for my
old favorite the daisy wheel. The text from a single use ribbon was
incredibly crisp and it worked with carbon forms, but dot matrix has
more font flexibility so has now become the mainstay for these forms.

Yes have use a few JetTec cartridges in my Epson 740, but very few places
stock them here..

I think also Swan does Cartridges..

But what about the new Epson R300/310 that are chipped, I thought that this
was being made illegal in the EU..?

Blame it on do-gooders that say "Lets all compensate the makers of print
cartridges and ink by making people pay for a new cartridge every time it runs
out."

The same people persuaded the FCC to make a law saying that phone cards have to
have a tax on them to compensate the phone company.

And don't even get me started on the RIAA and file-sharing. (yeah, lets
compensate the poor record companies that need to charge $17 for a CD with two
good songs on it)

In my state, do-gooders are in the process of making it illegal to have vending
machines that sell fatty foods in school.

That's because Jet Tec is such a crap distributor (as I have pointed out on
several occasions).
That's after several years of dealing with them.
Good cartridges, awful firm.

Or is Epson a dirty Word..?

Umm ... actually, the word is a bit "on the nose", at least with me.

I first owned an Epson Photo 700 which I refilled successfully for
about 2 1/2 years. I cut a large hole in the printer casing, exposing
the ink tanks at rest, so I could refill via syringe through the ugly
gaping cutout in the printer plastic. The cartridge was never removed
from the printer!! It printed many thousands of colour brochures and
photos. I was quite happy with it and used about three litres of bulk
ink (at one tenth the cost of the Epson ink). I must admit, it did
take a little time to do the refilling, though.

When I finally replaced the ink tank *for the first time*, the heads
clogged irretrievably - so I decided not to repair it.

When I tried to replace the Epson Photo 700, I found that Epson (along
with HP et al), had set out to screw consumers by electronically
trying to take away their freedom of choice - rip us all off. They
had fitted their cartridges with devices to stop people refilling
them. I emailed Epson and complained vigorously.

Normally I would have bought another Epson. Instead, I bought a Canon
6200. Then recently, I bought a Canon i865 (great printer!!) for it's
DVD printing capability (I still use the 6200 on another port).

Would I buy another Epson? Never - well, at least until they stop
trying to rip us all off with their anti refilling antics.

Regards,
Hughy.
