Should names automatically appear in the TO and CC fields when typing

We are implimenting Exchange 2003 with outlook 2003 (migrating from GW).
Question.
When I am adding recipients to an e-mail (to,cc,bc) I start typing the name
and unless I have already sent an e-mail to this person nothing shows up.
If I havn't sent an e-mail to this person before I need to click on Check
Name in order verify the name I typed is spelled right. Is this correct?
With GW the name would automatically show up.

Also,
I have contacts in my Contacts Folder. Do I need to add an Outlook Address
Book in order to add these contacts to e-mail?

The behavior with the Outlook cache is normal. You will not see names appear
untill you have sent to them at least once. As for the address book, go into
your contacts, right click the contacts folder that you want to see as an
address book (normally the root of contacts) and click properties. Click the
"outlook Address book" tab and check the box "show this folder as bla bla
etc..."

TIP: Type the 1st few letters of the name and hit ALT+K. this resolves names
quikly and easily. ALT+K is your friend.

Keep in mind that as you migrate your users you may not be able to send to
them using the cache. Ie.. if you send to a user on the old system, after you
move them to the new one, the cache will be pointing to the old one and the
mail will fail. I got over this by running a script at startup that deleted
the cache every day until i was finished my migration. Remember your old
friend Alt + K. solves issues like this b4 they begin :)
 
Also remember, however, that autoresolution (what you call Alt-K) also
stores these settings in the same cache file and users will not likely be
able to find them since autocompletion will be invoked before
autoresolution. This method only works well if you disable autocompletion
and use only autoresolution.
