Hi

Is anyone else having problems running SP3 ?

We installed it on several PCs about 2 weeks ago and ever since all of
them have been extremely slow. It's quite mysterious. Although the
processor is not working very hard, and although the hard disk light
is not on much, the PCs keep locking for several seconds. i.e. you
click on something and it just locks the screen with NOTHING happening
for 5 to 20 seconds.

I have tried uninstalling most things I could find (e.g. Flash/Java
etc) but little/no improvement.
There was also a new Windows Search ("4.0"??) that I had accidentally
installed, so I uninstalled that too.

Should we uninstall SP3 ??

Similar situation. Since installing SP3, I've noticed that my computer will
freeze for 7 seconds every few minutes or so. Rebooted in safe mode but no
change. Checking for processes in Task Manager but nothing that spikes during
the activity. The hard drive light goes practically solid during that time.
Any thoughts?

I installed SP3 friday morning and it worked fine that day. I brought my
computer to a radiostation where I used it during a dj performance but when I
came home I couldn't start Windows. The windows startup screen would be going
on forever and I'd have to physically stop the computer and restart later.
Then I got the choice to start with last functioning configuration of Windows
but that didn't seem to work either. Finally I'd enter safety mode which is
the only thing that works now.
The funny thing is that I mysteriously made it work yesterday after having
been in safety mode. I then again entered last functioning configuration and
it worked. But then automatic update was on, which is a true nuisance as it
threatens to shut down the system every now and then. I finally let it and
Windows hasn't worked since that.
I find this utterly frustrating. It's also not easy to find out what is
wrong. I remember that I once before installed SP3 en early autumn. Then I
also couldn't start up Windows. I had to de-install it . Recently when
talking to one staff at a music instrument store he encouraged me to install
SP3 when I asked him for advices regarding a sound card problem. Now I
remember why that was such a hassle in the first place.

I run a compal laptop reconfigured by Multicom with a Intel core2 Duo at
2.4GHz with 3GB ram when running XP (It has 4GB)

It's possible that there is some sort of compatibility problem--but there
isn't enough information to make even a wild guess.
What application(s) were in use during the "dj" bit?

Some of the symptoms point to possible driver issues.
Does the computer work normally in safe mode?

Details of the Stop Error Report would help diagnose your problem.

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by
allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Keep pressing the F8
key during Start-Up and select option - Disable automatic restart on
system failure. Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure.
Check for variants of the Stop Error message.

What is your computer make and model?

What exactly do you have by way of a Windows XP CD?

If a computer boots in Safe Mode and not in Normal code this provides
clues as to the problem. It means that a driver ( often the problem)
that does not not load in safe mode is what needs to be changed. If it
fails in safe mode it is a basic driver or service. This is why it can
be important to know which mode works and which does not.

Try another Safe Mode option
Enable VGA Mode: This option starts Windows in 640 x 480 mode by using
the current video driver (not Vga.sys).
