Hello,

Normally I don't tolerate adware on my computer but it seems
inevitable that buy using the free version of VLCPlayer you get the
Hotbar-adware with it and VLC doesn't function properly anymore if I
delete Hotbar.

So my question is:
Can I tolerate this Hotbar-thing without jeopardising my computer's
security?

Thanks in advance,

Massimo

I have no idea what you're talking about. I've got VLC Media Player on
my PC and there's not "Hotbar-thing". Probably because I'm using the
Windows 7zip (No installer needed) version and not the EXE. But I'm sure
the EXE installer comes without Hotbar as well. You should ask for
advice (about installing VLC) in alt.comp.freeware. They'll tell you if
Hotbar is part of the original package.

BTW did you download the installer from here?

Ditto.

Not HotBar crap is bundled w/VLC Player.

I seem to remember one of the stages in some install process that allowed an
opt out for some kind of tool bar, not sure if it was VLC, KMPLayer or
whatever, but my v1.1.3 doesn't have any such fluff.
Maybe it was Piriform that offered an [Ask.com] BHO with their freeware?

Then probably, that will be the cause.

Not my experience.

Yes, I sure did!

Now that is very strange David as I downloaded VLCPlayer from the
videolan.org site and was again (just as with the first time I
downloaded this app.) confronted with Hotbar adware.

Don't know, but in the .exe-version of VLCPlayer that I downloaded
from videolan.org there was no opt out (or -in) for the Hotbar thing.

I just tried it again (hasn't changed since recently when I first got it)
from http://bit.ly/ccIsAt and there's no Hotbar here.
Maybe you've been hijacked by something else?
Have you run MBAM or HJT or anything else
to have a look see what might also be on board?

Just in case you meant to ask "is this malware?" - you may have an
instance of "adware" that is just "ad supported software" and is a
legitimate adware not a malicious adware. I'm just guessing, but that's
the feeling I get from this thread so far.

Does it jeopardize your security? Probably not in the way that you think
it does, but seldom will additional unneeded software *increase*
security.
