I am in need of a boot disk because of my system missing a DLL file.
(MSVCRT.DLL) I don't have my Win98se CD so I was told to get a
boot-disk... or have one made up.

If I do download a boot-disk, should I save it to a Floppy? CD? Or
doesn't it matter?

Thank You

CD is better if you have a CD burner.

hi poor ,

a bootdisk at all is best on a floppy for its size .

if any only bootdisk will help you i doubt . actually i don't have
running w9x but if i remember right a sort of reinstall for your system
will be the best solution .

forgive my shitty english .

If it is a boot-floppy (and not a CD-image), then put it on
a floppy. A floppy image on a CD does not work and vice versa.

Otherwise I would say it is a decision of convenience.

From your question Leesa, your not quite sure what to do, are you ?. If your
computer
will run, you could download MSVCRT.dll off the internet at
http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?msvcrt.
You Will need this file anyway. D\load it to your computer and put it in the
Windows\System folder, and restart your computer.

That's the problem... I have downloaded the file. I have put it on
both a floppy and then a CD... and I cannot get my computer to see
either of the drives.

My Windows will only half-load before I get the error message. I can
get to the set-up screen where you choose safe-mode etc... But even
after entering command prompt strings the PC won't see any of my
drives... Drive A is the floppy, but it keeps saying GENERAL DRIVE
FAILURE. I tried a command prompt for the CD-ROM.... but the PC won't
see it.

I am really losing it here <pulling hair.... lol) It's been three
weeks and still, I can't get Windows to fully load.

Then get it. You may find it handy. Look for something like win98xxxxxx.iso.
Burn to CD.

You've got some hardware problem. Likey that dll isnt even missing.

Get someone to fix the hardware problem.

Which ?drives?, floppy, hard or CD ?. Have you gone into BIOS ?. Press Del on
startup, to see if your ?drives? exist there ?. Come on L.

Thanks... I am trying guys... believe me. OK.. It has been suggested
that the reason my PC won't "see" any of my drives is because Windows
doesn't get far enough into the boot-up process to allow for that.

I will be making a boot-disk within the next day or two. Everything I
have been doing, including this posting is all done from the local
library... and in order to download anything I have to get on a waiting
list that sometimes lasts for hours....

Now... if I create the boot disk, what do I do with it? If my PC
won't "see" my floppy drive now when I give it a command prompt how
will it see the boot disk?

Do I somehow activate the boot disk from a command prompt?

I am not very good with computers, as I'm sure you guys can tell.
Please try and be patient with me... lol

Thanks so much

The BIOS (press Del button on startup) should be able to `see` your drives,
without an OS.

Both while you are at it.

Maybe. Do they get listed on the black
bios screen before Win starts loading ?

Urk.

Now... if I create the boot disk, what do I do with it?

Put it in the drive, boot with it in the drive. It should boot off
that boot disk if the boot sequence specified in the bios is
correct. If it doesnt boot off the boot disk, get into the bios,
usually by pressing DEL early on, and ensure that the drive
you want to boot off is higher in the list than the hard drive.

it a command prompt how will it see the boot disk?

The boot disk is seen by the bios before Win is loaded.

Nope, you should be able to boot off it just by making
sure its in the drive before you turn the system on.

It would be more efficient to get someone to fix the hardware problem.

Corse that will cost more.

Since you have Win 98, you should start by booting to DOS from hard drive.
You hold the shift key or F8 while booting. If successful, scandisk c: and a: for starters.

this is okay . patience !

isn't there anybody around to help you a little ?
if not and if you can't get into the basics then try to catch a look at
the black screen with white letters on it , press the break-key and make
some notes what you can read there and post it .

it will save many lines of guessing ....
