I am using XP 5.1 with service pack 3 - outlook express 6.
I am using AVG 9.0 - Adware 8.1, spybot and spyware blaster.
I could use some advice please - should I remove all of these programs, or
some of these programs and install Microsoft's Security essentials (MSE). I
have researched on the computer and see good comments about MSE.
IF I do take off the programs I have and install MSE do I also need
Microsoft Defender.
Thank you in advance for your help.

Security Essential runs in the background, as does AVG, therefore you should
uninstall AVG
Adaware & Spybot, unless you have the paid for versions will only run if
invoked.
Security Essentals replaces Defender, if Defender is not uninstalled, it is
, as far as I'm aware, disabled

MSE when installed on XP will uninstall Windows Defender(WD). But, since
MSE appears to be in a perpetual beta

it's difficult recommending it. The issues with the beta product don't
appear to be present in XP, so that decision is yours.

I'd recommend that you keep WD, uninstall AVG and replace it with the
free version of either AntiVir or Avast, uninstall Spybot or disable
it's CPU intensive Resident components called SDHelper, TeaTimer, and
undo the Immunize feature, and retain Spyware Blaster.

Avast free

See number 8 Resident on the above page to disable it's Resident protection.

I installed MSE and still have Defender installed and it is still able to be
run
No idea what you two are talking about. MSE had no effect on Defender..
