You need the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) if you plan on running any java
applications. Unless you know for a fact that you need it, or you get any
errors about JRE missing, you should do fine without it.
You should install Java when you think you are going to need it in the
future. You will need it when you are planning on using applets on websites.
Applets ranging from games, to online access to you bank account.
