Should I get a new high speed modem?

COX cable tells me that my download speed would be much faster with a
modern modem (Mine is a Motorola Surfboard SB3100 (an antique). Is
this true and what would I really gain from a new modem? The general
recommendation seems to be a Motorola Surfboard 5120. Thank you.

If you want more speed, then get new modem. With the new SpeedBoost system
Cox uses, I often get 12 MBps bursts. I do not think your old modem can
handle that.

What are 'bursts?'

How can you tell when you get these bursts?

Will surfing, in general, be faster (worth the price of a SB5200)? My
OLD SB3100 works fine (but, obviously is slow).

When I download binary news group headers, I see 12MBps for 15 seconds then
it goes back to 7 MBps for each group of headers. This happens at the start
of each large file download. My binary news client shows the download speed.
If you do ALT CTL DEL, and select Networking, you should be able to figure
out your D/L speed.

Thanks -- but that remonded me of another question: I never understood
what a binary was. Do you mind giving me a quick explanation? Thanks.

This is a text news group, meaning the people who post here are posting text
messages. Someone figured out a way to take binary files, such as pictures,
programs, etc, and encode them so that they could post to text news groups.
To be nice, people post binary encoded messages to news groups that have
binary in the name, such as alt.binaries.pictures.trains. Most stuff
nowadays in Y-Encoded (yEnc). Outlook Express cannot decode yEnc files so
you need some other news server client.
