I'm sure I've got a virus. I've looked online but none of the recent/current
ones sound
quite like what I have.

I'm having problems with viewing and sending email attachments in Outlook
Express, can't
launch IE, and am even having problems with programs (e.g., Excel) freezing
..

I've scanned with Norton Antivirus and nothing comes up as infected, but
when I tried Trend
Micro's free HouseCall scan, it told me the following file was infected and
uncleanable:

securityID=816093-MS03-011&privacyAPI32=x401.html

Is it safe to just delete this file?

Thanks for any help.

Julia

Julia,

The file you mentioned is a legitimate MS security patch ID. You may be
getting a false positive from the on-line scan. Symantec also has an on-line
scan you could try and see if it comes back with a clean bill-of-health.
Visit the following site and select
"Virus Scan"

I'd hate to tell you to delete the file w/o knowing a lot more info about
your system, & what if anything was going on when or right after this
happened. On the net, installing a program etc.. Almost sounds like your
browser was hijacked or a trojan. If you are going to do that, I'd save it
to a floppy 1st, remembering what directory it is currently in.
ad-aware, spybot search & destroy, hijack this are good programs that might
help you. Some links are under a post of mine from yesterday regarding 1on1
dialer trouble
