I am running IE v 6.0 with WinXP sp 2. In my Add/remove folder I see :
J2SE runtime Environment 5.0 update 4 and 6
and JAVA 2 Runtime environment, SE v 1.4.2_08
Do I need these programs? I don't remember how they got there.
Beside saving HD space , what harm done if I delete them?
Thanks.

Don't touch them! If you screw Java up, you may find that some pages will
not work properly. What's worse, it's not easy to uninstall/reinstall IE or
Java, so don't touch them if you're not experiencing problems. Java doesn't
take up much space at all.

Thanks Donny:
Will comply!!

I did a bit of research. Do you run spy sweeper? I found that the Java 5
update 6 was fine if I turned active x protection off in spy sweeper.

Hi Jimbo - Do uninstalls from Add-Remove Programs for *ALL* of those
*EXCEPT*
the one listed as: J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6

It's strongly suspected that certain "malware" (Winfixer/Vundo) is making
use of an exploit in earlier versions of the Sun Java JRE if they are
present on your machine even if they are not the selected version of Java
that's in use. Anything earlier than one of the 5.0_X releases should be
removed particularly any 3.0_X versions.
