Hi
If anyone can give me some advice I would be grateful. Have seen the Acer 3502LM in Tesco for £468 and am thinking of buying it. That is about my budget...
Does anyone have any opinions on that laptop? Or any better ones for a similar price?
Thanks very much!

Simple answer ... NO!

;)

IBM make the only 'laptops' worth buying. :thumb:

An IBM for under £500 ... WOW.

But then I had a look at the spec' ... shame on you IBM.

It will be a bit of a slug ... if all you 'need' is something portable to do "course work" then I could put up with it's slowness ... sorry to say but "decent laptops" start at around £1,000

I now revise my last statement for IBM ... however, they are one of the most reliable "builders" of laptops/notebooks

You pays your money, you takes your choice.

;)

Just a note to say thanks for the advice. I ended up buying a Dell Inspiron 2200 for £535. It totally suits my needs and, apart from being a bit heavy, is absolutely great so far!

any system with 256mb is going to go painfully slow

im on a stinky 3-and-a-half year old hp pavilion and even with 1gb of ram it sucks :P no matter how much i upgrade it it craps itself up, so im giving up and building myself a new one

hi - this is my first post.

about the 3502lm
We have just bought 2 laptops both acer
I bought the 3502lm from tesco as the person that started the thread was asking about. It was for my wife. She is happy about it and it is quite a good little machine. for the money I would say it was well worth it - the only drawback is that it is not wireless, but that can be rectified for a few pounds. I had a look at its insides and it is easy to upgrade there is a spot for an internal wireless card and the sodimms are within easy reach. the HD is easy to replace as well.
In short this is a cheap laptop if you just want to do basic tasks, but can easily be upgraded if required.
On the other hand I have an acer travelmate 8103wlmi and it also was well worth the money!!!

We just bought the Acer 5002LM

They make good solid laptops... the only thing i find weird is that the HD's come formatted to FAT32! Why... anyone know?

Nearly every Home PC, or Laptop, (branded) I have seen has it that way ... you should know by now, not many manufacturers actually know how to set-up and computer … and ‘converting’ to NTFS is a disaster waiting to happen … NTFS is a more secure File System, but you need to do a ‘clean install’ … now where is that Windows CD they never provided?

Does FAT have any advantages?

It runs OK as it is... the little AMD Turion 64 is happily crunching away for us 24/7...
