Should I buy a new printer if I cannot fit compatible cartridges ?

I've been using an Epson 880 for 2 years and currently use about 5
compatible (non-genuine) ink cartridges a month. I therefore spend about
£200 a year. To buy Epson's own would cost me £1200 a year!
I wish to purchase a second printer but understand that all new printers are
'chipped' to prevent the use of non-genuine cartridges. Is this the case or
are any decent new printers available that are not 'chipped'.
Any help or advice appreciated. Chris.

All the "Decent" printers as you state seems to mean Epson. All the new
one's are chipped - but all can use compatible cartridges. Most can be used
with a chip resetter should you wish to refill.
After nearly a years effort some of the latest JetTec cartridges will now
allow the previously 30% or so wasted ink to be safely used: these are due
out soon as production warrants.
Equally and dependent on your budget the Canon range is worth a look as they
utilise a prism ink state recognition which mostly functions as full or near
empty - but at least is easily visible.
Most higher end or Pro printers do use the Peizo quartz printhead design but
the Canon comes quite close in quality.
The JetTec Canon cartridges are a different unique design to other
compatibles as the snap off and snap on again clip prevents inadvertant
insertion ( such as happens with the Epson tear off tag) and equally seals
the ink exit port for refillers. The ink side is 50% larger than the Canon
design and correspondingly the sponge side smaller.

Most, if not all, Epson cartridges can be refilled. Cartridge World offer
this service along with an unconditional warranty for your refilled
cartridges AND at the same time warranty your printer. To the best of my
knowledge No other company will do that.
Try www.cartridgeworld.org for latest info and location of nearest shop. By
the way, they offer a while-you-wait refill service.
