Shortcuts

XP Home o/s. Many times I have had to re-do shortcuts on my desktop to the
various drives because my system keeps "losing" them!
When I click on a shortcut, the system starts a browse function to look for
the item - I then know my computer has "lost" the association.
Why is this and how do I fix it, please.
