but the links are valid

By "text files" do you mean ONLY the ones with a ".txt" extension?

Does the shortcut indicate "Opens with: Notepad" (with the blue notepad
icon) on the "General" tab of the shortcut's properties dialog? If not
you may need to reestablish the file association in Windows Explorer.

Does Windows complain about being unable to locate Notepad when you use
the shortcut?

Is the proper path and file name indicated in quotes in the "target:"
box on the "Shortcut" tab of the properties dialog including quotes
(Like "C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\My Documents\My text file.txt")?

Hi Robert, I have to start again, I right things at night when I'm
half asleep.

If I create a shortcut for a directory, that shortcut opens with explorer.

If I send that directory to desktop as a shortcut, it won't open when
i click on it on my desktop.

thanks GK

Try this site. Fix .lnk and folder associations.

Fix File Associations.

Yes Robert, I can't seem to get anything RIGHT.

And wouldn't you believe it , I tried my shortcuts and
they work at the moment.

Thanks for the site, will look into it as soon as the need arises.
