When I create a shortcut on my desktop for an
Iomega 100 Zip Drive (USB) to the Zip Drive
(Drive K) it works Ok - and when I copy it to the
Task Bar it still works OK until I put another
Zip disk in the drive when I get a warning
message :

Problem with Shortcut

The drive or network connection that the
shortcut 'Shortcut to ZIP -100(K).lnk' refers to
is unavailable. Make sure that the disk is
properly inserted or the network resource is
available and than try again.

If I then put the original Zip disk back in the
drive the shortcut works !!

The same problem arises if I try to create a
Shortcut to the A Drive on the Desktop and move a
copy to the Taskbar.

If I carry out the above procedures without any disks in
the respective drives the Shortcuts don't work at all.

This problem arose after I downloaded some critical
updates for Windows XP off the Microsoft Website a few
weeks ago. When I restored the position to before the
Updates the problem disappeared.

Can anyone help please ?

I just had that same exact problem with desktop shortcuts for a DVD drive. I
could make it, and 1 second later, click on the shortcut for it, to
right-click for an eject, and get that same error, asking if I wanted to
delete it.
It only started after loading a ton of MicroSoft updates from their update
wizard. I started deleting updates, until my shortcuts worked again. I
couldnt tell you which was the culprit, but it was an update that killed
them.
I am already running XP Pro SP1 (so SP1 isnt the problem).

Thanks for your reply -

I have also searched the Microsoft Knowledge Base
under 'Shortcuts'. it looks as though others have
suffered as well. Microsoft's advice seems to be don't
try to correct the error but wait for Microsoft to issue
a combined solution in a Service Pack!!
