Shortcuts listed on Start Menu

I have found a location that lists items in the start menu
but it only lists the items that are in folders. Any
shortcuts that are on the start menu are not listed.

Where in the registry can I go to manipulate the shortcuts
on the start menu that are not in a folder?

What I mean is if I have the shortcut to Microsoft Word on
the start menu I cannot see it in the registry but if I
make a new folder on the start menu and put the shortcut
in it I can. Where does it list the shortcuts?

Here is the reg key I found:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
\Explorer\MenuOrder\StartMenu\

Thanks for your help.

Adam

You might start by telling what problem this causes and or what it is you're
wanting to do.

Hi Dave,

What I am trying to do is manipulate the shortcuts on the
start menu by pushing out registry settings across our
Netware network. We have encountered a 'quirk' in which a
certain install adds a shortcut on the start menu to the
icon file (*.ico) instead of the .exe on some of the
installs.

Thanks,
Adam

* Ok still mostly clueless here. Manipulate them how? The key you mentioned
only has to do with sort order as far as I know.

Dave,

Don't know what it is you want to hear but all I need is
the registry location that contains what will be listed
under start menu/programs.

I don't really need help with the manipulation part just
with finding the list. I understand you are trying to get
a 'big picture' here but we are just testing some ideas
and cannot find where this info resides in the registry.

And as far as the 'quirk' I mentioned earlier, if you
can't understand that the install incorrectly makes a
shortcut that points to the icon file instead of the .exe
then I can't help you there.

Thanks again,
Adam

OK, this isn't stored in the registry at all. If the user profile already
exists then the user will see all of the shortcuts found in;
%allusersprofile%\Start Menu\Programs
plus the shortcuts found in;
%userprofile%\Start Menu\Programs

If a new user then it will be all found in;
%allusersprofile%\Start Menu\Programs
plus those found in;
%systemdrive%\Documents and Settings\Default User\Start Menu\Programs

On the "quirk" thing you'll probably need to get in touch with the
application developer.
