Locate it, right-click it, and in pop-up menu, select "Send to...">"Desktop
(Create Shortcut)". If this is in Control Panel, select "Create Shortcut" ;
you will be told that a shortcut cannot be created so would you like to put
one on Desktop. Yes. I've added shortcuts to other items from C. P. by
doing what I described.

Thanks Malv,

But I don't think that will work. The only way I see to get to device
manager in XP is through "conrol panel, system" and device manager is then a
button to click. It can't be right clicked. I just need the name of the .exe
program that opens devie mgr.

Best,

Assuming C: is your system drive.
Go to:
c:\windows\system32\devmgmt.msc
Right click and create a shortcut.
Cop and paste the shortcut to your desktop.
