shortcut to deleted server locks desktop

I have a user who has a shortcut on his desktop to a document on a file
server that is no longer in service. The files were moved to a new file
server. Everytime you click, right or left, double or single, on the icon it
lock the machine up with an hour glass. I have tried logging in as a domain
admin and deleting the shortcut via docs and settings\user\desktop but it
locks up there too. Is there a registry hack I can use to do this? All help
is greatly appreciated.
