A system clean up programme (pcbugdoctor, IIRC) I (foolishly?) ran deleted
the Desktop shortcuts I had made to all my drives.
Now, when I create new ones I cannot make them point to where they are
suposed to.
If I let the computer search, it find somewhere totally incorrect.
If however (for example) I browse to the CD/DVD drive it will open it and
show me the the zip folder on the disc, but the icon now changes to a zip
folder!!

help!! (please)

use system restore

I wish!!!
I would if I could....
It won't restore until after that date.
(Unsuccessful)

I've even put the XP disc in and run *sfc /scannow* to no avail :-((

I'm reposting my problem...

Three things:

First, since this was caused by a 3rd party, have you not asked them what
they did? Part of the problem is I avoid such products like the plague since
they generally cause more problems than they solve and I refuse to allow
such any where near my hardware. There could be a resident parasite involved
that's playing games with you.

Second, have you looked at the options in the app to see if there is an
option to reverse the dama^T^T^T^Tchanges?

Lastly, if all else fails you could try a repair reinstall, but that's going
to get ugly since it will force having to download all OS patches.

Describe how you are making your shortcuts to your drives.

For example go to my computer and right click on your C: drive and in the
list tell it to make the shortcut. You will now see your shortcut in the
"mycomputer" window. Now copy and past the icon to the desktop. Now dub
click the shortcut on the desktop. What does it do...?

Huh?
Sorry, but you can't create a shortcut there. (in the *My Computer!*
window.)

If I rt click and drag *C* to my desktop, and *Create shortcut here*, it
works as it is supposed to.
Ditto my 2nd hard drive (D)
However, if I do the same thing with either my CD/DVD or my CD/RW drive they
don't work and won't *find* them.
I've just discovered that I have the same problem accessing my card reader
this way too :-((((
They all work if I access them directly (My Computer) but not from a created
shortcut.
If I *browse* I finish up at *Adobe weblog* !!!!!!!!!!

Hmmm, what happens if you make the shortcut to the cd/dvd drive when there
is no media in it? Before testing the shortcut, stick a CD in there or
Windows will yell at you for no media present.

Exactly as described above...
That's how I've been doing it.
However, If I put a disc in before creating a shortcut, the drive will open
normally.
If I *then* create a s/c, and then remove the disc, on clicking the s/c I
will be asked to insert a disc, i.e. normal behaviour!
Hmmmmm
I will send this and then reboot to see iwhether it stays that way.........
Back soon !

Whoopeeeeee.
That's fixed it.
So simple really!

Thanks for at least making me think straight!

Great! I hope the new shortcuts "stick" and stay working for you.

Just a bit of extra info for you, there was a Windows update that broke
desktop shortcuts for drives for a while. I believe it was corrected by a
later update. I have never seen documentation stating it was fixed but
since we don't see many posts about that problem these days, would assume
(dangerous to do!) that is what happened.

Maybe that was the culprit then!
(As far as I am aware I'm fully up to date.)

Thanks...
