I just started using Windows XP. On my old machine I was able to create
shortcuts and place them on my desktop WITHOUT the words "Shortcut to" in the
title. Can this be accomplished in XP?

Glen,

There are two methods to accomplish this:

1. Create a shortcut for an exe file to your Desktop
2. Right-click the Shortcut and then remove the words "Shortcut to" from the
filename.
3. Delete the shortcut

Repeat the above steps 4-5 times, and Windows will not add the "Shortcut to"
prefix for future shortcuts.

Open Regedit and navigate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer

In the right-pane, create a new REG_BINARY named "Link" and set it's data to
00 00 00 00

FYI, Tweak UI automates this task.

Sure. There's more than one way, but perhaps the easiest is using
the free TweakUI. It's at

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

(if you have SP1 or SP2 installed)

or

http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

(if you don't have SP1 or SP2).

Use TweakUI - one of the XP Powertoys from
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

Once installed you will find it in Start - All Programs - Powertoys for
Windows XP

Its Explorer page, uncheck 'Prefix "Shortcut to" on new shortcuts'
