Shortcut key for the Start button???

I just received a "new" notebook from my employer, an IBM ThinkPad model T23
with the "eraser-head" mouse rather than the touch-pad. In any case, I
prefer shortcut keys to the mouse.

This is my problem: there is no "Windows-icon" key on the keyboard. On my
gigantic paperweight at home, that key emulates clicking on the Start button.

Does anyone out there know of another shortcut key (combo) that emulates
clicking on the Start button? I am running Windows 2000 OS with SP4.

Thanks!

CTRL+ESC ?

Did you want *the* start button (i.e. map it to another key) or merely
the ability to bring up the start Menu using the keyboard?

Glad to see I'm not the only one to wonder how IBM can think that the
windows key is a waste of keyboard real estate. Obviously, their hardware
developers must still be using OS/2-Warp.

It does MUCH more than that. Press "R" while holding down the windows key,
and you get to the Run dialog; Press "D" while holding down the windows key,
and you get show/unshow desktop functionality; Press "E" while holding down
the windows key, and you get windows explorer; Press "L" while holding down
the windows key, and you either lock a workstation on the domain, or switch
user on a workgroup workstation.

Control-Esc will do this for you. If you want the other windows-key
functionalities I mentioned, the only way I have found is to create the
equivalent desktop shortcuts, and give them keyboard shortcuts similar to
the windows key shortcuts available on computers that are fully WINDOWS
compatible.

I tried this, but once I get used to it on the St^H^HThinkpad, I have to
retrain myself on my desktop.

If you're lacking the Windows key and want one back (as I am on my
ThinkPad), let me know ...

For me, yes, I am lacking one, and wanting it back. Do you know how I can
get one?

Well, I've been somewhat off-line in a manner of speaking. Oddly enough the
only "Wells" I could find under "Directory Services" was named Don. I'll try
the address listed for you in this newsgroup - if you do not hear from me
shortly, please give me a hint.

Well you won't as the message bounced. Try emailing me at my newsgroup
