Just out of curiosity, why do those little arrows bug people? What's wrong
with being able to see the difference between the actual icon for an item
and shortcuts to it? I just don't get it, but I'm curious.

Anyone know of a way to get rid of those little arrows on the shorcut icons
withour installing a third party utility (I miss TweakUI). I know there
must be a registry tweak somewhere...

TIA

-Greg

I am anal retentive and the little arrows but me. I already know the
difference and I don't need the little arrows to tell me. Just looks
neater...I know...I need to get a hobby!

I saw this method in a post last week sometime and the feedback was it
worked for the person. I haven't personally tried it. Save your registry
before attempting any changes.

Copy the lines between the ****** into a Notepad file and save it as a .reg
file then merge it into the Registry by double clicking and accepting it.

*************************************
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer]
"link"=hex:00,00,00,00
*************************************

Good luck,
Keith

Thanks for the replies but that key does not exsist Malke...
I'll do the third party thing...I am afraid of playing with the registry
Thanks again gentleman

This Registry entry removes the word "Shortcut" not the arrow. Sorry for any
confusion.

Here's a link to a web page that will help:
http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=499870
look for:
Remove the arrow (Shortcut Overlay) without side effects (32 & 64-bit)
about 1/4 down on the page.

Hi Greg,

That key has to be created if it does not exist by default. I have (re)written that article for Windows Vista. See:

How to remove or modify the Shortcut overlay in Windows Vista:
http://www.winhelponline.com/articles/153/1/

Has a .REG file also, and also the lightarrow icon file extracted from TweakUI XP PowerToy.

Ramesh,
Just a quick comment if I may,
I must say,
you have EXCELLENT grasp of the registry.
Especially like the regedit for the temp files and cleanmgr.exe

Jeff :-)

Guy, you have put together a very helpful site.
I absolutely love your "Key Learning Points"
you include after each tip or tweak. Brilliant!
Your steps and explanations are easily understood.

Looks to be another good place to direct users who
may need tips or help.

Thank you.

Take care,

Michael
