I have several shortcuts to websites on my desktop. They start out having
unique icons. They start out having unique icons. In time the unique icons
have a tendency to disappear and are replaced by generic ones. Where are
these unique icons stored? When clicking on the shortcut properties there is
a option to change the icon to something else, but no indication as to where
the original is stored.

The icons are called "favicons" and they are stored in your Temporary
Internet files which is why they disappear over time. If you would like
to keep them, MVP Kelly Theriot has a tweak here:

favorite icons (line 108, right column)

"Don't Panic"

Good program. It actually searches the internet to replace the missing
icons.
Thanks
