How do I remove the shortcut arrows in XP home?
Knowledge base refers to registry value IsShortcut but
has instructions that apply to all windows systems except
XP. I can't find the right key to edit in XP although I
did it for windows 98.

Download TweakUI

Hi, Lorne,

Go to Start, Run, type REGEDIT and hit enter,
Click Hkey_Local_Machine,
Software,
Classes,

Scroll way down until you see LNKFILE,
Highlite it and in the right side,
right click IsShortcut and rename to Shortcut and hit Enter.

Scroll on down again until you see PIFFILE,
Highlite it and in the right side,
right click IsShortcut and rename to Shortcut and hit Enter.

This should get rid of the shortcut arrows on the desktop after you ReBoot.
On some machines you may have to go back and look for InternetShortcut
and edit IsShortcut there too.
You will just have to try it to see.

Good Luck,
Jerry

If you use this option to delete shortcut arrows, you will notice double entries
in the context menus as a result. The better option is to change the shortcut
icon to #29. This gives you an invisible shortcut arrow and allows single
entries in the context menus. Go here for more information and use the last
option. http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/75/

Thanks for the reference, Durand,
Although I have never had any problems you describe, it gives one something
to think about.
Tweakui is also a good way to remove the arrows, but on some systems, it
doesn't work.
The Registry tweak is just one way to do it, when all else fails.

You're welcome.
