I am a new user of XP pro. I'm trying to find out how to
get the icon on the bottom of my screen that will take me
back to the desk top no matter where I am or how many
programs I have open

Turn the quick launchbar on, the show desktop icon is there
by default. Right click on taskbar, select toolbars/quick
launch.

FWIW, the Windows Key plus D will take you to the desktop.

Using the mouse and don't want to go to keyboard ? Another way is to
right-click a blank area on the Taskbar, however thin, then select "Show
the Desktop". Ya have Lots of ways now; they all work so take your pick :)

Well, in the past, I had an icon for desktop, the desktop itself, not the
folder, on the quick launch taskbar. Its action was exactly like Win+D. But
some time ago it disappeared mysteriously and I cannot restore it! One more
suggestion and we'll get it!

Glad I could help - do browse around Kelly's site when you have the
time because it's a valuable resource.

Related side note: whilst messing around tonight, I found that if you
access RUN then type "install" (without the quotes), it will bring up
a list of desktop shortcuts. Also, Run "display" will bring up the
desktop display properties box.
