i did the unthinkable, opened my system while it was on and removed the
power cable from the hard disk and then wanted to slot it on again,
there was a spark and a smell and the system went off. i short
circuited it.
i removed all the cables and tried starting the system. It POSTed. But
unfortunately, when i tried cabling the hard disk, the system refuses
to start. it just refuses to start. when i remove the cable to the hard
disk, it starts fine.
i can't put a finger on why this is happening. is there charge on the
hard disk? why is the hd stopping the system from starting? could my hd
be condemned? would really love someone's help.

You problaby activated the reverse polarity protection (diode across
ground). the power circuitry of the hard drive is fried. It could be fix if
you know your components and the rest of the drive was able to be protected.

If your computer works with a new disk drive, consider
yourself lucky. You probably fried your existing drive,
and the interface on it. Connecting a dead drive to
a Southbridge IDE interface, can make the computer
unhappy. You won't know if there is any permanent damage,
until you try connecting a new disk drive. (Or use something
like your CD drive, and see if you can boot a Windows install
CD for example. That will help demonstrate that the IDE
interface is still working.)

There is a moral to this story, but I think you already
understand what that is.

If you need the data that was on the disk, it could
either be expensive (data recovery firm), or lots
of experiments (swap controller board from _exactly_
the same model of hard drive). If you have backups, then
the lesson learned is relatively cheap.
