shell extension

fred

i latelly used e registry cleaner program to elmininate
unecessary file and i by mistake erase the shell extension
from my home computer.
since then ther is no link betwen any incon or shortcut
and program. i cannot even access the restaure system.
i am not sure what to do.
i even try to run the windows xp disk to try to fix the
problem but the set up does not start!

Assuming that the .EXE and .LNK association are corrupt:

* First option is to see if your registry cleaner utility has an UNDO feature. Some utilities backup the keys automatically before deleting a registry key. If so, undo the changes.

* If not, try renaming the file %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe to rstrui.com and run it. It starts the System Restore UI, now rollback the system configuration to a previous state.

* Another option is to apply the .EXE and other file association fixes manually. Download from MVP Doug Knox's site: http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm
