I had to reinstall XP due to an infection. I still have a backup copy of my
old shell.dll file that I had made some tweaks to it with icons. Can I just
use the "old" shell.dll file with the "new" install and the icons work?

Shell.dll is used to run older 16 bit applications where
shell32.dll won't work right. I doubt the hooks would be right
to use a non XP shell.dll.

That said, you could try it. Just rename the shell.dll that's
there now to something else and put yours in. Restart and see
what happens. If things go haywire, put the old one back.
