Sheet protection and checkboxes

I have created a sheet with several checkboxes and I would like to keep the user from changing their formats. I have locked the objects and protected the sheet. When the user checks the checkboxes I get the "The cell or chart you are trying to change is protected and therefore read only......" error message. Can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks.
