I can share files that are on my XP computer on my Lan but the XP
computer cannot see files on this VISTA computer. I have sharing
turned on and the workgroup name is the same. In fact this is simply
an upgraded install so all should still work. When I try to add
network place on the XP machine I find the XP computer by browsing but
I get message that it is not accessible, you may not have permission
etc. I certainly though I did . If I look at the drive I want to
access it says shared on this Vista machine. What am I missing here.
It is strange that I can send to the XP machine but cannot read files
on my Vista machine form the XP machine, can't even see them.

Go into Network and Sharing Center and make sure Password Protected
Sharing is set to off and that everything else is set to on.

CLOSE, Media Sharing is off and I can find no way to turn it on but
the others are all on except password which is off.

I had the same situation when I first setup my Vista system in my home
network of XP and other systems.... it was simply a matter of changing my
Vista system so I sign into it at startup with a user name and password.
After that, I have no problems accessing Vista stuff from XP computers, or
vice-versa.

I have no idea why that matters but I was signed on to the Vista when this happened.
The xp can see my computer but it cannot access anything and the folder I want is set to share.

I went through the whole process. Network and Sharing center say that
the folder IS SHARED and it is set up to share by Everyone. The Public
folder and others all show up but I can see NONE of them on my other
computer running XP.. If I go to network places and go to add a
network place and then browse it gets to the point where it shows My
Computer (The Vista Machine by Name) but no folders are under it and
if I click on it I get the cannot access message se the administrator,

This worked perfectly when both were XP!

If I double click the file URL that was shown when I set it up it
works but ONLY on the local computer. Can my router be goofing this up
somehow? I doubt it since I can get form Vista to XP but not from XP
-Vista.

I should add that I CAN share the printer on the XP machine, even was able to dothat without specifically turning it on in network setup. It was done by simply adding a printer on the xp machine with add printer and making it the defaultThat proves access to the vista machine is working. SO WHY NOT TO FOLDERS???

I don't understand? You don't mean automatic logon do you? I dont want access by password but want the equal of simple file sharing which ought to work.
