Is there a way to hide folders based on permissions?
Just the shares themselves, not the folders within
shares. Obviously $ is an option but I would rather do
it based on perms..

thanks for any insight!

The solution you are looking for comes in in the form of a product
called Cloak.

Taken from the website:
In addition to tightening security, Cloak also helps to streamline your
users' overall experience. Since users won't see folders and/or
files that they can't access, their directory trees are measurably
less cluttered. They'll receive less "Access Denied" messages
because they can't click on folders that are hidden from their view
(whether their attempt was intentional or accidental).
