Hi. I need help on some questions, (I have never done this before ). I have
a desktop at home, & one in our small business. both pc's were bought new 3
yrs ago. I also have a new Laptop.
Can I make it so that I can access files between both desktop pc's?
Can I make it so that I can access files to either desktop pc's, by using my
laptop?
Is this called "small network set up" or something like that. My laptop has
wireless card. the destops dont. If you can give me info on where to read
about this in 'easy' terms, that would be great; or perhaps share your
knowledge on this. If wrong NG, kindly direct me to the appropriate one,
Thank you

windows xp home/sp2/AVG virus/Zonealarm (desktops), windows firewall on LT,

The desktops at home and the small buisiness are these at the same location?
Are you connected to internet on all if so how?

Hi,
I recently did this with my old desktop and new laptop. You will need a
router and since my cable modem was already hooked up to my desktop I left
the desktop wired and used wireless networking for the laptop. Your router
should give good instructions. There are many wireless home network
instructional links I found with Google but it did take several of them for
me to understand all the little quirks. Once I got the laptop to recognize
the Internet connection, the biggest problem was setting up file sharing for
the files. You have to go in and check off file sharing for the files you
want to be able to access. The firewall settings were probably the hardest
for me to understand so get your laptop online without the firewall first
then work out the settings with the firewall. It will work, lol. It is just
a matter of going through the settings one at a time and getting them right
here are some of the links I used:

There is a group for wireless networking that was a big help.
Microsoft.public.windows.networking.wireless
I hope this information is of some help

Yes. Read the tutorials here: http://www.practicallynetworked.com/

Caveat;
If you connect the modem to a PC then use a router to connect the PC's you
will only have internet available whilst the modem connected PC is on.
To enable all PC's to connect individually, modem > router > PC's
When using a wireless connection ensure you turn on the security features
You can buy a reuter that has both wireless and hardwire(ethernet)
connections. eg netgear to name but one
If the desktops dont have ethernet connections an ethernet card is cheap,
you can go all wireless, but more expensive.

Hi ALL! The desktops are 13 miles apart. The desktop at home has a dialup
connection. The desktop at work has DSL through Qwest with a DSL modem. My
laptop can aquire the DSL signal when I take it to work. At home, the laptop
uses dial up. DUMB question: Can I use the DSL connection to work 13 miles
away so that both desktops can share the internet. Sorry.........had to ask

Maybe "wishful" is a better description of the question? Even if you could
use the DSL connection that is available to a computer 13 miles away, your
connect speed would be throttled by whatever means you would be using to
connect from home to work.
