Sharing, or not to share

Hiya,

I have a wireless network at home, where all 3 PC's are setup so that
the root of each drive is set to share. I don't use shared folders at all.

In a couple of days I have someone coming to stay who will want to use
the internet connection. I won't want them seeing all my files on my PC's.

Is there some resource I can look to and learn what I need to do to keep
this friends PC from having access to my files when we're all switched on?

Many thanks,
Patrick.

Hi
Depending on your Wireless Router's capacities, and or the software
Firewalls that are installed on the computers you can create a scheme based
on assigned IPs that would block IPs that are not assigned to three
computers.
Otherwise you get a second inexpensive Wireless Router and configure a
Segregated network.

The root of all XP drives is shared by default. This called an
"administrative share" and cannot be deleted.
Set the folders that you willing to have your friend access to be shared..
Leave the others alone.
Disable anonymous enumeration of shares with Local Security Policy. (You
control LSP via the Administrative Tasks in the Control Panel)
Disable the Guest account (might break your other computer's access).
Disable simple file sharing. (You disable simple file shared using the
Folder Options tab in the Control Panel)
Create identical accounts on the computers.
Map the shared resources to require a username and password. (One way to to
use the "net use" command to the online command processor which you start
via Start/Run)
Do not allow your friend to map to the administrative shares. This may or
may not be appreciated by your friend.
