Sharing on XP pro workgroup

P

pete

Hi,
I have a workgroup, (no domain, no server), with fixed IP adresses logging
onto a firewall with a DNS service.
I need to share one of the PC's it's self, as opposed to user shares.
If I go to sharing or security, the is no mention of the workgroup or any of
the PC's in the workgroup.
Am I missing something?
thanks

UPDATE!

XP pro all PC's
Logged on as a administrator.
Windows workgroup, fixed IP addresses, no server or domain, connected to
hardware firewall with built in dns server, attached to the firewall is a
broadband modem.
I am trying to add a workgroup pc to allow access to my pc, not a user, but
the workgroup PC, it's self.

Local security settings:-
Access this computer from the network
object types, (groups is un-ticked), so I tick it
select location and select workgroup, a box arrears stating that, "This look
in box does not allow any of the objects you selected for the previous look
in container, so a default choice has been substituted.
It then lets me add the PC to the security settings and when I select ok, I
get this message, "Failed to save local policy database".

Any ideas?
Thanks

There is no such thing as the old 98 style "share level" permissions in XP
Pro. Create an account on each computer with the identical username and
password. Then you should be able to access shares without having to provide
a username/password each time. Or go with "simple file sharing" if security
is not a concern.

Thank you for replying Kurt.

The problem is that a program that I am using, (Pdmworks), needs to see the
shared machine, (PC2) name, as opposed to the shared folder when using the
user name. When I select the folder, from within Pdmworks, a message appears
saying that it, (Pdmworks), can't see this folder, please share PC2. From
PC1 machine I can add, delete and even change files in the folder on PC2
using windows explorer.

That's because, as the error message tells you, it's looking for a shared
folder. You need to share a folder and provide that name rather than the
computer name (you can't share a computer).

Thanks Kurt,

This folder is shared, I can access this folder from pc1, add files delete
files, alter files and save them etc..
According to the program makers, the PC has to be shared, not just the
folder.
