Is there anyway to share an HP HL2040 laser printer on WinXP. They tell me
no, but I'm hoping there's a workaround. Thanks.

I assume that you mean a Brother HL-2040.

Who tells you? And what happens when you try?

Are you trying to share it using the Brother NC-2100p (external ethernet print
server) or NC-2200w (external wireless print server)? Or as a network shared
resource attached directly to a PC? If the latter, is it connected via USB or
parallel?

is "they" HP?

"We" assume you mean you have this printer attached to machineA and from
machineB, you wish to connect to the shared printer. Are you getting an
error when attempting this that lead to HP stating this could not be done.
If HP does something in the driver that blocks this, that's not so good.

If they is "someone else" we'll get you sharing. And yes, you can share a
printer without using the server service.

Thanks, Alan. Yes, I tried sharing the 2040 from a networked winxp
workstation. Other workstations could not print to it - they would see the
printer, but the jobs wouldn't ever print, never got there. I called HP and
they said the printer couldn't be shared on an XP. SO I put it on an old 98
workstation and it works fine, tho very slowly as you can imagine. This was
several months ago, so I'll try the share again from the XP to clarify the
errors/behavior.

Thanks, Lem - I'm just trying to share it from a workstation over our
network. It is connected with 2.0 usb cable.
